*A Note From The Author

This collection of stories was created as an experiment with AI technology. I used a program called ChatGPT to generate not only ideas for these stories and characters, but also most of the content.
I wanted to see what AI could create, and the results were surprising, to say the least.
For most of the ideas and planning, I would prompt it for a few different options on things like story direction or characters. From those, I choose the ones I felt would work the best with what was already there.
Because the point of this was to see what AI could create “on its own,” I attempted to keep my voice and style out of the process as much as possible. It still sneaks in a little bit, especially in the larger chunks I wrote myself, but there were parts of the story where prompting ChatGPT to create necessary chunks of text was more time-consuming than writing it myself. You’ll see this mostly in transitions of the story, and some conversations.
When creating and editing, I wanted to keep as much of the AI-generated content as possible, while still making the stories readable. I tried to think of myself as more of a ghostwriter/editor instead of the “author” for this purpose. I wanted to preserve what the AI made, while still making necessary improvements.
While not the best work of fiction out there by any stretch, I think this is a great example of what programs like ChatGPT could be capable of in the future.
What this says about the future of authors, writers, editors, and other types of creators, I’m not sure yet.
My hopes are not that this creates the end of the novelist, but that it becomes a tool we can use to aid our writing, create better stories faster, and overall further the craft.
